Conservation ’ s Friends in High Places : Neoliberalism , Networks , and the Transnational Conservation Elite

چکیده
Despite a massive worldwide crisis of biodiversity loss, there have been considerable successes in global conservation.1 An ever-increasing amount of land is contained in protected areas, which now cover over 12 percent of the world’s land surface area, and over 25 percent in some countries.2 International conservation NGOs are growing in size and inouence, and global political structures give increasing prominence to conservation issues.3 Representations of biodiversity as exotic and endangered, occupying places where humans are destructive intruders, have become ubiquitous. Accompanying these successes have been profound changes in the way conservation works. Conservation is increasingly planned at a global scale. The roles of NGOs, corporations, and the state are increasingly indistinguishable. Market mechanisms and logics are becoming seen as the only way to do effective conservation.4 This article argues that at the heart of this trend lies a well-connected and networked elite, shaping conservation discourses and practices. It draws its membership from across NGOs, states, corporations, science, and the media and it works through personal contacts. Elite connections have been central since the emergence of a global conservation movement over a century ago,5 but the current elite is bigger, more diverse, more powerful, more effectively structured and more inouential than the elites of the past. Its emergence and structure are consequences of shifts in global environmental governance and

Special sites or areas that have one or more attributes which distinguish them as somehow extraordinary, usually in a religious or spiritual sense, are called sacred places. They tend to evoke a feeling of some awesome, mysterious, and transcendent power that merits special reverence and treatment. Sacred groves are stands of trees or patches of forest that local communities conserve primarily ...

Prioritization and selection of sample areas from the whole nature is necessary to protect biodiversity. The main purpose of this study was to evaluate the development of a network of conservation areas in Markazi province using landscape metrics. For this purpose, we used MaxEnt, Marxan, Fragstat softwares and eight conservation criteria. Results were compared by using simulated sorting, greed...

In the history of architectural conservation, conservators or conservation theorists’ viewpoint regarding the identity of historical places, particularly from the perspective of facing change, is one of the most significant bases of the conservation theories. However the Iranian society today, doesn’t have a clear view consistent with the cultural principles of the historical pla...

Energy as one of the most important factors of production, as well as one of the most important marginal products, has effential role in trade and economic development. The importance of energy has increased after the two oil crises in 1970’s. The relationship between energy and trade is an important topic to study for several reasons. If energy consumption is found to Granger cause export...
متن کاملA total variation diminishing high resolution scheme for nonlinear conservation laws
In this paper we propose a novel high resolution scheme for scalar nonlinear hyperbolic conservation laws. The aim of high resolution schemes is to provide at least second order accuracy in smooth regions and produce sharp solutions near the discontinuities. We prove that the proposed scheme that is derived by utilizing an appropriate flux limiter is nonlinear stable in the sense of total varia...
